Materials and care

Material. Crystal glass and a solid wood base.

Care. Hand wash both. The glass takes warm soapy water and a soft cloth — the cut pattern is where a drying mark shows, so dry it rather than leaving it to drain. Wipe the wooden base and dry it; don't soak it or put it in the dishwasher, the same as any solid wood.

Grain. Every base is a different piece of wood, so tone and figure vary from one to the next.

Why this glass

A rocks glass that doesn't sit still.

Orbit Spinning Whiskey Glass - Urban Jiko
How it works

The glass has no flat bottom. That's the whole trick.

Instead of a foot, the glass is shaped to a smooth curve underneath, and it sits in a dished wooden base cut to receive it. Set it down with a nudge and it tilts and turns in a slow orbit inside the wood, then settles upright on its own. The base is what keeps it in one place while it does that — the glass turns within the dish rather than travelling across the table.

  • Rounded base, no flat foot
  • Dished wooden stand holds it
  • Settles upright on its own

The pour

A drink you watch before you drink it.

Whisky is already a slow drink, and this makes the first thirty seconds of it something to look at. The gentle turn moves the spirit across the inside of the glass and lifts the aroma the way swirling a glass by hand does — only you are not holding it, you are sitting back. That is the honest appeal: not a different whisky, a different way of spending the evening with it.

  • Turns for a slow half-minute
  • Moves the spirit like a swirl
  • Made to be watched

The cut

Cut glass, and a lamp behind it.

The sculpted pattern is not only decoration — a faceted glass throws light around while it turns, which is why a spinning plain tumbler would be dull and this is not. Five patterns, from broad flutes to fine ribs to rounded dimples, and the amber of a whisky reads differently through each of them.

  • Five cut patterns
  • Facets catch and throw light
  • Crystal glass, weighted rim
The patterns

Five cuts, one glass underneath.

Every pattern is the same glass, the same base and the same price. Pick on how you want it to catch the light.

  • Orbit Spinning Whiskey Glass - Urban Jiko

    Bamboo Rattan

A woven lattice that reads like caning. The busiest of the five, and the warmest against wood.

  • Orbit Spinning Whiskey Glass - Urban Jiko

    Glacier

Broad vertical flutes. The most restrained, and the one that most resembles a classic cut tumbler.

  • Orbit Spinning Whiskey Glass - Urban Jiko

    Ice Flower

Crosshatch facets that frost the light. The one that sparkles hardest under a lamp.

  • Orbit Spinning Whiskey Glass - Urban Jiko

    Striped Belt

Fine, close-set ribs running top to bottom. Quiet up close, and it streaks the light as it turns.

  • Orbit Spinning Whiskey Glass - Urban Jiko

    Water Drop

Rounded dimples across the body. The softest of the five, and the easiest to hold.

Questions

Frequently asked about this glass

How does the spinning actually work?

The glass is curved underneath instead of having a flat foot, and the wooden base is dished to receive that curve. A light nudge sets it turning in a slow orbit inside the dish, and it comes back upright by itself. There is no mechanism and nothing to wind or replace — it is the shape doing the work.

Will it spill?

The base is dished, so the glass turns within it rather than wandering off across the table, and it rights itself as it slows. Pour a normal measure rather than filling it to the rim and it stays where you put it. If you want a drink to sit untouched for an hour, stand the glass on a coaster instead — it is happy either way.

What comes in the box?

One glass and one wooden base. It is sold as a single, so order two if you want a pair — which is what most people do when it is a gift.

How big is it?

9.2cm tall with an 8cm rim, holding a 200 to 300ml pour — a generous measure with room for ice, and a comfortable width to get your hand around.

Which pattern should I choose?

They are the same glass at the same price, so it is purely about the look. Glacier is the most classic, Ice Flower throws the most light, Water Drop is the softest to hold, Striped Belt is the quietest, and Bamboo Rattan is the most decorative.

Can it go in the dishwasher?

Hand wash both parts. The wooden base should never go in a dishwasher, and the glass is better washed by hand and dried with a cloth — a cut pattern is exactly where a drying mark shows.

Is it only for whiskey?

No. It suits anything served short and neat over ice — an old fashioned, a negroni, a rum, a mezcal — and it is just as good with a non-alcoholic spirit or a tonic. The size is a rocks glass, so it does what a rocks glass does.

What if I'm not satisfied?

Thirty days to change your mind, no hassle. If it is not right we will put it right.

Why the price works

Quality has a cost. Middlemen shouldn't.

Real customers. Real evenings.

Everyone who comes round has to spin it once. It is the most conversational object in the house.

Gordon L.Verified buyer

Heavier than I expected and the cut catches the lamp beautifully. It does not feel like a novelty.

Petra M.Verified buyer

Bought two so we both had one. Sitting there watching them settle has become the whole evening.

Ade O.Verified buyer

The wooden base is proper solid wood, not a plastic ring. That was what I was worried about.

Henrik J.Bergen, NO

Went for Ice Flower and it genuinely throws light across the table when it turns.

Rosa C.Seville, ES

Gave one to my father-in-law. Ten minutes of him spinning it and grinning is worth the price alone.

Tim B.Austin, TX

Sits nicely in the hand and the rim is comfortable, which a lot of cut glasses get wrong.

Anjali S.Singapore

No spills in three months of regular use. It turns inside the base and stops where it started.

Doug F.Perth, AU

I use it for negronis more than whisky. Same effect, and the colour through the cut is superb.
