The ring

One line of light, closed on itself.

Nearly every ceiling fixture at this size is a cluster of small sources pretending to be one. This is the other approach: an aluminium band with a plated finish, and a diffuser running the whole way round it, so what you see lit is a single continuous circle rather than a row of bright points. It is also why the shape holds in daylight, switched off — a plain metal ring on three wires reads as geometry, not as a light fitting waiting to be used.

The drop

A hundred and fifty centimetres of cable to work with.

The maker's drawing marks the suspension at H150CM and labels it adjustable, which means 150cm is the longest this hangs, not the height it arrives at. Three steel cables run from the ceiling plate and are shortened at the plate as it goes up, so the fitter sets the drop to your room. That range is what makes the same fixture work over a dining table at 80cm and down a stairwell at full length.

The diameter

Roughly half the width of what it hangs over.

Ring pendants are almost always bought a size too small, because a 60cm circle looks enormous on a screen and modest over a real table. The rule worth holding a tape measure against is about half the width of the surface below: a 60cm ring over a table of 120 to 150cm, an 80cm ring over 160 to 200cm. Under a table's half-width and the ring floats; over it and it starts to crowd the room.

Worth saying plainly, because it is the thing people get wrong. Every price on this page buys a single ring with its own ceiling plate. Where a photograph shows two rings over a row of tables, or five running down an office, those are separate fixtures on separate ceiling points, bought and wired one at a time. If you want the arrangement in the picture, add that many to the basket and have your electrician confirm you have that many points to hang them from.

The white you choose

Pick the light colour once, at the order.

Warm, natural and cool white are three different fixtures here rather than three settings on one, so the choice is made in the basket and it is the light you live with. Warm white is the one for a dining table or a living room; natural white suits a kitchen or a study; cool white belongs over a desk. The maker also states plainly that the fixture is not dimmable, which is the more useful half of the answer: wire it to an ordinary on/off point rather than an existing wall dimmer, and decide the brightness by picking the right diameter for the room.

Which size for which room

Take the width of the table, island or console the ring will hang over, and halve it. Each price below buys one ring.

40 cm — a hall, a landing, a small round table
Suits a surface around 80–100cm across. A two-seater round table, a console, or a hallway where the ring is the only thing on the ceiling. The smallest in the range.
50 cm — a four-seater or a bedroom
Suits a surface around 100–120cm across. A round table for four, or a bedroom where you want the circle read as a shape first and a light second.
60 cm — most dining tables, most islands
Suits a surface around 120–150cm across. The size that fits the ordinary family dining table and the ordinary kitchen island, and the one most people should be buying.
80 cm — a long table or a tall room
Suits a surface around 160–200cm across. A dining table that seats six or more, or a room with enough height to take something near the full 150cm drop.

Frequently asked about this chandelier

The photographs show several rings. How many do I get?

One. Every price on this page is for a single ring with its own ceiling plate. The photograph of two rings over restaurant tables, and the one with five running down an office, show separate fixtures hung from separate ceiling points. To repeat an arrangement like that, order that many rings and make sure you have that many wired points to hang them from.

Which diameter should I buy?

Measure the table or island it will hang over and take about half that width. Roughly: 40cm over 80–100cm, 50cm over 100–120cm, 60cm over 120–150cm, 80cm over 160–200cm. If you are between two sizes, the larger one is almost always the one people are glad they picked — a ring reads smaller in a real room than it does on a screen.

How far below the ceiling does it hang, and can that be changed?

The maker's drawing marks the suspension at 150cm and labels it adjustable, so 150cm is the maximum drop from the ceiling plate to the ring. The three steel cables are shortened at the plate during installation, so your fitter sets it to whatever you need below that. Over a dining table, aim for 75 to 90cm of clear air between the tabletop and the bottom of the ring. The shortest possible drop is not published in the product record.

Will it work on my existing wall dimmer?

The manufacturer states that this fixture is not dimmable, so plan it onto an ordinary on/off lighting point rather than a dimmer circuit. Choose the brightness by choosing the diameter and the light colour instead. If the room is currently on a dimmer, mention it to your electrician when the fixture goes up.

Are there bulbs to buy, and can I change the light colour later?

No bulbs to source — the LED runs inside the ring itself, which is what gives the continuous line of light rather than a row of points. That does mean the colour temperature is settled at the order: warm, natural and cool white are three separate options in the basket, not three settings on the wall. Warm white for dining and living rooms, natural white for kitchens and studies, cool white over a desk.

Can it go on a sloped or vaulted ceiling?

The ceiling plate is a flat round disc and the ring hangs level from three cables, so it wants a level surface to screw into. On a slope that usually means a sloped-ceiling adaptor or a flat pattress made up on site. No sloped-ceiling fitting is listed as part of this product, so make it one of the first things you ask your electrician about — it is a straightforward job, but it is not in the box.

What does it weigh, and what do I fix it to?

The weight is not published in the product record, and we are not going to guess at a number for something that hangs over a dining table. Plan it as a fixture that wants a joist or a ceiling anchor rated for the load rather than a plasterboard plug alone. Your electrician will see what is above the ceiling when the old fitting comes down. If you need the figure before you order, ask us and we will go back to the maker.

How is it wired, and what voltage is it?

It is hardwired to a ceiling lighting point, so a qualified electrician should fit it to the wiring rules where you live. The maker rates the fixture at 90–260V AC and lists it as available in 110V and 220V; tell us which supply you are on when you order and we will confirm it before the fixture ships. The manufacturer also lists CE, FCC, RoHS, UL and CCC.

What if it arrives damaged in transit?

Photograph the outer carton and the fixture before anything goes up on the ceiling, and send them to us the same day. Every order ships tracked, so we can see where it has been, and we will get a replacement moving without asking you to argue with a courier.
