What's included

  • Glass jar — clear, so you can see what is left.
  • Acacia lid — with a silicone gasket seated in the underside.
  • Acacia dipper — grooved, and fixed through the lid so it lifts out with it.

Materials and care

Material. Glass jar with a solid acacia lid and a matching grooved dipper.

The seal. There is a silicone gasket in the underside of the lid, which is what keeps honey from picking up damp and keeps everything else out of the jar.

Care. Wash the glass however you like. Wash the acacia lid and dipper by hand and dry them — never soak them and never put them in a dishwasher.

If it crystallises. All raw honey does eventually. Stand the jar in warm water for a few minutes and it goes clear again — do not microwave it, because of the wooden lid and because heat spoils good honey.

Why this jar

Honey with its own spoon.

Acacia Honey Jar - Urban Jiko
The dipper

Fixed to the lid, so it can't wander off.

The grooved acacia dipper passes through the lid and lifts out with it, which means it is never in the drawer, never sticky on the worktop and never a teaspoon you used because you could not find it. Lift the lid, drizzle, put the lid back. The dipper goes with it.

  • Dipper fixed through the lid
  • Grooved acacia
  • Lifts out with the lid

The seal

A gasket, under the wooden lid.

Set into the underside of the acacia is a silicone gasket that presses onto the rim of the jar. Honey is hygroscopic — it draws in damp from the air and thins if you let it — so a lid that actually closes is doing more work here than on almost anything else in a kitchen.

  • Silicone gasket seals the rim
  • Keeps damp out of the honey
  • Nothing gets in

On the table

Glass and acacia, left out on purpose.

Honey belongs on the table at breakfast rather than in a cupboard behind the flour, and this is made to be looked at while it sits there: clear glass so the colour shows, warm acacia on top, and a dipper standing in it. It also means you can see when you are running low without opening anything.

  • Clear glass, warm wood
  • See the level at a glance
  • Made to be left out

Questions

Frequently asked about this jar

Is a dipper included?

Yes — a grooved acacia dipper, and it is fixed through the lid so it lifts out with it. It cannot go missing in a drawer.

Does the lid seal?

There is a silicone gasket in the underside of the acacia lid that presses onto the rim. Honey draws in damp from the air, so a lid that closes properly matters here more than on most things.

Is the jar glass or ceramic?

Glass — clear, so you can see the colour of the honey and how much is left. The lid and dipper are solid acacia.

What happens when the honey crystallises?

All good honey does eventually. Stand the jar in warm water for a few minutes and it clears. Do not microwave it — the lid is wooden, and heat is bad for honey anyway.

Can it go in the dishwasher?

The glass can. The acacia lid and dipper must be washed by hand and dried — never soaked, never machine-washed.

Will the honey stain the jar?

No. Glass is non-porous, so it washes back to clear every time.

How does this compare to your beehive honey jar?

Different characters entirely. This one is a plain glass jar with an acacia lid and an attached dipper — calm, natural, made to live on a table. The Nordic Hive is a decorative moulded beehive with a glass lid and bees on it, and it publishes a 450ml capacity. Pick on which one suits your kitchen.

What if I'm not satisfied?

Thirty days to change your mind, no hassle. If it is not right we will put it right.
