Materials and care

Material. Food-grade 304 stainless steel, the grade used for food containers, with BPA-free lids sealed by a silicone gasket. Nothing your food sits against is plastic.

Washing. The steel bodies are dishwasher-safe. Wash the lids by hand in warm soapy water and dry them — hand washing is what keeps the gasket sealing properly for years rather than months.

Cold storage. Freezer-safe, so a batch cook can go straight from the counter to the freezer in the same container it was portioned into.

Before you choose

Round or square? Same price, different job.

Both sets cost the same, so pick on how you actually eat rather than on what you'll spend.

  • Stainless Steel Food Storage Containers with Snap Seal Lid - Urban Jiko

    Round, if you pour

Round nests tightest and has no corners to scrape out, which makes it the better shape for soups, stews, curries, yoghurt and last night's leftovers. 350ml, 650ml and 850ml.

  • Stainless Steel Food Storage Containers with Snap Seal Lid - Urban Jiko

    Square, if you pack

Square wastes no shelf between containers and sits flat in a lunch bag, so it is the better shape for sandwiches, bento, prepped veg and a week of portioned lunches. 400ml, 600ml and 900ml.

Why steel

Built for the food, not for the season.

Stainless Steel Food Storage Containers with Snap Seal Lid - Urban Jiko
The seal

Four clips onto a gasket, not a lid you hope holds.

The lid presses a silicone gasket against the rim and four clips hold it there. That is what lets you dress a salad at home, put it in a bag with a laptop, and open it at one o'clock to find the dressing still on the salad.

  • Silicone gasket seal
  • Four-clip snap lock
  • Made to travel in a bag

The steel

Tomato and curry leave nothing behind.

Steel is non-porous. There is nowhere for a bolognese to stain, nowhere for a curry to tint and nowhere for onion and garlic to settle in. Monday's chilli container holds Wednesday's cut fruit and the fruit tastes like fruit.

  • Food-grade 304 stainless
  • Takes no colour or smell
  • Rust and stain resistant

The stack

Stacks full, nests empty.

Loaded, they stack into a column that holds a fridge shelf in order. Emptied, they drop down inside each other so three containers take the cupboard space of one. It is the half of the problem that a drawer of mismatched tubs never solves.

  • Stacks loaded, nests empty
  • Three sizes, one footprint
  • Fits a fridge shelf in order

The week

Cook once on Sunday, eat well until Thursday.

Portion straight off the stove, seal, and put them in the fridge or the freezer in the same container you will eat from. Freezer-safe steel means a batch cook does not have to be decanted into something else to survive the week.

  • Freezer-safe
  • Portion, seal and store
  • Refill for years, not once

Questions

Frequently asked about this set

Can these go in the microwave?

No — steel never goes in a microwave. Tip lunch onto a plate to reheat it. What these are built for is the fridge, the freezer, the dishwasher and the bag between them, and steel is what makes all four work.

Are the lids genuinely leakproof?

Yes. A silicone gasket sits under the lid and four clips press it onto the rim, which is what holds soup, dressing and sauce in a bag rather than in the lining of it.

Round or square — which should I get?

Round if you mostly store things you pour: soups, stews, curries, yoghurt. Square if you mostly pack lunches: it wastes no shelf between containers and sits flat in a bag. Both sets are the same price, so it is purely about how you eat.

What sizes come in each set?

The round set is 350ml, 650ml and 850ml. The square set is 400ml, 600ml and 900ml. Each set is three containers with three lids, and every dimension is listed further up the page.

Can they go in the freezer?

Yes. Portion a batch cook straight into them, seal, and freeze in the same container you will eat from. Leave a little room at the top for anything with a lot of liquid in it.

How do I wash them?

The steel bodies are dishwasher-safe. Wash the lids by hand in warm soapy water and dry them — hand washing is what keeps the gasket sealing properly for years rather than months.

Will they stain or hold smells?

No. Steel is non-porous, so there is nowhere for colour or smell to lodge. A container that held curry washes back to plain steel and holds cut fruit the next day.

What if I'm not satisfied?

Thirty days to change your mind, no hassle. If it is not right we will put it right.

Reviews

Real customers. Real kitchens.

I prep five lunches on a Sunday and they all fit on one fridge shelf. That never happened with the old tubs.

Rachel D.Verified buyer

Chicken curry on Monday, strawberries on Thursday, and the strawberries tasted like strawberries. Sold.

Adam W.Verified buyer

Carried soup in my work bag next to a laptop for a week straight. Not a drop.

Ffion J.Verified buyer

The nesting is the bit I underestimated. Empty, all three live in the space one used to take.

Marco B.Chicago, IL

Went square for the lunch bag and it was the right call. Sits flat, nothing tips.

Aisha M.Birmingham, UK

Batch cook on Sunday, straight into the freezer in the same container. That is the whole system now.

Ben H.Auckland, NZ

Six months of daily use and they still look like the photos. No cloudiness, no orange corners.

Wanjiru K.Nairobi, Kenya

The clips take a proper push to close, which is exactly what I wanted after years of lids that just rested on top.

Sofia L.Lisbon, PT

Bought the round set, came back a month later for the square. They do genuinely different jobs.
