Material. Stone, with the open pitting and irregular veining that comes with it. No two pieces carry the same markings.

Wax. Use a tealight in its metal cup, or stand a pillar on a small disc, and you will never have to get wax out of stone. If wax does reach the recess, let it set completely and lift it out cold rather than scraping at it warm.

Cleaning. A dry or barely damp cloth. Keep it away from soaking, and away from anything acidic — vinegar and citrus are what mark stone.

The stone

Pitted, veined, and never twice the same.

Stone comes with an open, pitted surface and veining that runs however it ran in the ground. That is the difference you can see across a room between something quarried and something poured into a mould: a cast piece repeats, and stone cannot. Yours will not match the photograph exactly, which is rather the point of buying it.

The candle

Takes a tealight or a slim pillar.

The recess is cut for a standard tealight in its metal cup, which is the easy option and keeps wax off the stone entirely. A slim pillar sits in it just as well — stand it on a small disc and you keep the same advantage. Candles are not included, so you choose scented, unscented or flameless rather than inheriting whatever came in the box.

Do I get one or two?

One. Each order is a single candleholder in the height you choose. The photographs show two together because they look best that way — if you want that, order both heights.

Are candles included?

No — the holder only. That is deliberate: it lets you pick scented, unscented or flameless rather than being sent whatever the factory had.

What candle fits?

A standard tealight in its metal cup drops straight into the recess. A slim pillar works too — stand it on a small disc and the wax stays off the stone.

How big are they?

Both are 7cm across. The Small stands 11cm tall and the Large 14cm. Together they give you the stepped height that the photographs show.

How do I get wax out?

Let it set completely, then lift it out cold — wax releases from stone far more easily hard than warm. Better still, use a tealight in its cup and the question never comes up.

How do I clean the stone?

A dry or barely damp cloth. Keep it out of standing water and away from anything acidic — vinegar and lemon are what mark stone surfaces.

Will mine look like the photograph?

In shape and size, yes. In markings, no — the pitting and veining differ on every piece. If you want two that echo each other, order both heights at once and they will at least come from the same run.
