14.5 cm across and 10.5 cm high — near enough 5¾ by 4 inches, or the footprint of a grapefruit. It weighs 324 g: light enough to move around the garden on a whim, heavy enough to stay where you put it.
It is a lantern that sits on things rather than a stake that goes into the ground — there is no spike and no post. Table centres, the edge of a step, a wall top, a windowsill, the corner of a raised bed. At 10.5 cm tall it will not light a pathway ahead of you, and it is not trying to: what it lights is the surface it is standing on.
One lantern per box. The photographs show two because a pair is how most people end up using them.

Charging, weather and care
Charging. The panel sits in the lid and takes daylight through the day. A spot that catches the afternoon will always give you a longer evening than one in permanent shade. It comes on by itself at dusk and goes off at dawn; there is nothing to plug in and nothing to switch.
Weather. The solar and LED module in the lid is sealed to IP55 — dust-protected, and rated against water jets from any direction — so ordinary weather sits comfortably inside what it is built for. The shell is pierced all the way through by design, which is what makes the pattern, so rain runs through it and straight out again rather than collecting inside.
Winter. Bring it indoors before a hard frost, the same as you would a ceramic planter or a glazed pot. Somewhere dry through the coldest weeks and it comes back out in spring the way it went away.
Cleaning. A damp cloth over the shell, and a wipe across the panel every so often. A dusty panel is the usual reason a solar light gives a short evening, and it takes about four seconds to fix.
It doesn't light the garden. It draws on it.
Point a garden light at a path and you get a lit path. This one is pierced right through, so what leaves it is not a beam but a scatter — a few hundred leaf shapes thrown across decking, gravel, a tabletop, the face of a step. The pattern shifts as you move around it and it reaches a good deal further than the lantern itself. The light it gives off is not really the point. The light it puts down is.

A lantern for a table, not a light for a path.
Matte, unglazed, and quiet in daylight.
The white is left matte, with a fine granular surface and a band of pressed beading around the shoulder. By day it reads as a piece of pottery rather than as a light, which is the whole trick with garden lighting: the thing has to survive being looked at for the fourteen hours a day it is switched off.

Glazed and glossy, sharper after dark.
The same form under a deep gloss glaze that pools in the beading and holds whatever light is left in the sky. Because the body is dark, the lit cut-outs read harder against it: the white glows softly all over as well as throwing the pattern, the black gives you the pattern and very little else. Neither is more correct. They are two different evenings.

What a candle does, without the wax.
This is what most people buy it for, whatever the category says. Something warm and low in the middle of an outdoor table that will not blow out, will not run down the sides of a holder and does not need anyone to find a lighter. It comes on by itself as the light goes, it is still going when everyone has given up and gone in, and in the morning there is nothing to clear away.

Frequently asked about this lantern
Is this a pathway light?
Not really, and we would rather say so before you buy than after. It stands 10.5 cm tall and sits on a surface — there is no stake and no spike — so it lights the table, step or wall top it is standing on rather than the ground ahead of you. If you want a lit path, a taller staked light is the right tool for it. If you want the pattern, this is the one.
Is it one light or a pair?
One. The photographs show two because a pair is how most people end up using them — down the length of a table, or either side of a step — but what ships is a single lantern. Add two to the basket if you want the arrangement in the pictures.
How long does it stay lit?
The manufacturer does not publish a run time, and we would rather leave the figure blank than print one we cannot stand behind. What we can tell you is what decides it: how much daylight the panel caught that day. A spot with afternoon sun gives a longer evening than one in permanent shade, and wiping the dust off the panel now and then makes more difference than most people expect.
Does it need wiring, batteries or a switch?
None of the three. The panel is in the lid, it charges through the day, and it comes on by itself at dusk and off again at dawn. There is nothing to plug in, nothing to buy for it and nothing to remember.
Can it stay out in the rain?

Set into planting, the white is easier to find.

Yes, and plenty of people do. Charge it outside during the day, bring it in for the evening, and you have a cordless table lamp with no cable and nothing to switch on. Behind glass it charges more slowly than it does outdoors, so a day out on the step buys you the better evening.
